Sometimes in a startup it’s easy to forget that users are people and treat them like statistics. To talk to them for customer development purpose rather than to genuinely understand them.

How much traction do you have? What’s your growth? What’re the conversion rates?

While it’s definitely useful not to neglect numbers, it’s also important to see users as individuals.

I’d much rather have a user who cries at the demise of Learnemy than 10 users who don’t.

There’s a group of people in the startup ecosystem that’s severely under-appreciated.

They are the first believers – the employee #1s.

These are the people who will invest a part of their lives for the shitty job/salary/job prospect founders are giving. Yet they are hardly celebrated (with the exception of Sheryl Sandberg) like founders, investors and users.

Go hug an employee #1 now.
